BASILICA APARTMENTS

Project Description

The new Basilica Apartments project, located in Upper Queen St, represent an increasing intensity of development in Auckland. The project consists of 35 apartments above a commercial retail ground floor with car parking concealed behind. The apartments are a mix of one and two bedroom apartments, all with full width by three metre deep balconies. These balconies provide ample opportunity for outdoor shelter living and extend the living areas of the apartment. 
The project responds to the immediate context with the development of a ‘heavy’ base fronting onto Upper Queen St aligning with the neighbouring building to the north. The upper level balconies are lighter in their articulation on the upper four floors. The rear of the building responds to the context of the adjoining heritage church with a vertical emphasis of the facade treatment with a series of bi folding shutters. Each balcony has a series of shutters for sun shade and privacy. The apartments are generously appointed and laid out for contemporary inner city urban living.
