New Lynn War Memorial Library

New Lynn War Memorial Library

NZIA Auckland Branch Award 2006

The New Lynn Library is located in the heart of New Lynn and is a social and cultural “storehouse” incorporating a Citizens Advice Bureau, a Council Service Centre and a Memorial Public Square. Dramatic artworks feature in bas-relief, depicting the history and culture of New Lynn, to the sheltering walls along McRae Way to the southeast, and the central spine wall.

The library space incorporates adult’s and children’s areas. The adult section includes reference areas opening onto informal study areas with views of the external landscaping. The children’s area includes unique design features to encourage learning and reading experiences. Library staff are located at a central service desk while study, research and reference areas are clustered on a mezzanine overlooking both the library and the Memorial Square. The New Lynn Service Centre facilities are integrated into the library complex to allow people to conduct transactions (paying rates etc).

The Citizens Advice Bureau has frontage onto the square close to the main entry, with adjacent meeting facilities.

In keeping with recent civic building design and council policy, the building design incorporates generous natural lighting, environmentally friendly air control, and sustainable design elements in all areas.

The building represents a strong social and cultural identity and presents a friendly face to the urban fabric of New Lynn. The square is landscaped to include planting, paving, and seating and the artworks within the library extend out into the square.
