Gordon's philosophy has been to search for a meaning in architecture expressive of the New Zealand natural and urban environment. To do this his approach is to respect the environment in which the building or design is located and develop a design process with the client to create architecture with an evolving and responsive quality. If the resulting buildings improve with age and use, then these fundamental goals are achieved and enhanced.

An examination of the site, program and its representation combined with the clients desires and expectations forms the basis for an architectural investigation that is specific to each project. Through these investigations an architectural form is developed in conjunction with an ongoing discussion within the office and with the client.
